IceBowl FAQs

What is IceBowl?

IceBowl is an annual hockey tournament that rotates between the five Western Canadian medical schools. This spring, the 30th IceBowl tournament is returning to its roots in Edmonton! The weekend will feature both competitive and open tournament divisions, and multiple social events. These include our Friday Night Alumni Mixer at MKT Edmonton, and our Saturday Night Hall Party. If you don’t play hockey, no problem! There will be opportunities on and off the ice for players and non-players of all levels. IceBowl is an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow medical students from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, thus helping build the foundation for future personal and professional relationships!

Who can attend?

To purchase a player pass you must be a registered medical student at one of the 5 Western Canadian medical schools. All students and their guests are welcome to purchase a spectator pass to watch the games and attend our social events. We have a special rate for alumni and their family to attend the games and the Friday Night Alumni Mixer.

Where will I be staying?

Holiday Inn Conference Ctr Edmonton South Hotel. Check out our accommodations page for more info!

How will I get around?

Your IceBowl hosts will coordinate transportation shuttles between all event venues within the city for all participants staying in the event hotel. Schedule to be posted soon!

What division should I register in?

Historically, players that sign up for the competitive division have experience playing competitive hockey and want to play against the best of the best from the other schools. The open league is a space for skaters of all skill levels to get in on the action in a more informal environment - only sticks, skates, and helmet required!

What are the costs associated with participating in or watching IceBowl 2024?

Spectator tickets will be available at $50 (plus tax) for the all-inclusive IceBowl Weekend Pass and player tickets $150 (plus tax) to compete! For more information on the packages available, please go to the registration page.

How do I register?

Registration opens February 15, 2024. Player registration closed March 25, 2024. Head to the registration page to sign up as a spectator!

What if I need to rent equipment?

Your IceBowl team will be organizing equipment rentals for anyone who does not have their own! We have approximately 36 sets of equipment (12 small sets, 12 medium sets, 12 large sets) that we can rent out on a first-come first-serve basis for $25 for the entire weekend. This would however NOT include jocks, skates, neck guards, jerseys, and sticks - we would highly recommend asking any friends/family to borrow equipment for the weekend if possible.

Regarding skates, if you are unable to borrow, both Totem Outfitters and Millwoods Sport & Cycle offer skate rentals at a daily price, as we are unfortunately unable to coordinate skate rentals.

Is IceBowl affiliated with a charity?

Yes! This year, IceBowl has partnered with the Paralympic Sports Association (PSA), a local Edmonton organization dedicated to providing adaptive recreational sporting opportunities for children, youth, adults and seniors with physical and/or developmental disabilities. All obtained funds in excess of the required costs of the weekend will be dedicated to the PSA.
